These are preliminary test shots using a pre-production Sony E 2.8/16mm lens and a production-level Sony NEX-5. According to several sources in the net the sample quality among the pre-production lenses is varying considerably. For these test shot I had only a few minutes time, but they were done using a tripod, as well as camera AF. The information given here is preliminary, and a more in-depth review of the E 2.8/16mm and the E 18-55mm kit lens will follow mid-June, when production level samples are available.

First, as a point of reference, the Minolta AF 2.8/24mm at the 24MP full frame sensor of the Sony Alpha 900.
Center resolution is excellent even at f2.8.
Corners suffer from CAs and low contrast.

The Sony certainly doesn't look perfect (yet?), but compared tho the much more expensive 24mm full frame lens its corners are quite OK. Not so the center: Resolution is missing. The lens clearly is de-centered, and has even less resolution power in the other corner ...
Note that the image was taken using AF; careful manual focusing with sensor-preview might have resulted in a better image - however I had access to the NEX-5 just for a few minutes ...

At f4 the situation has improved considerably; details both in the center as well as in the corner are acceptable - but not really good ...

 |
Finally, at f8, center resolution is really good, and the corners - apart from CAs - are good as well (remember - it's a superwide lens, not a standard prime!)
(The images at f11 look nearly identical and are not shown here)

Again, as a point of reference, the Minolta AF 2.8/24mm at f8, using the 24MP Sony Alpha 900 DSLR
