A900: Minolta AF 2.8/200 APO, 2.8/80-200 APO, 2.8/70-200 APO G (D) SSM

All three f2.8 Minolta telephoto lenses in the 200mm range produce very good results on the Alpha 900. While my eldest lens, the 2.8/200mm APO (1986), is clearly the best of the three lenses, the center resolution of the 2.8/70-200mm APO G SSM (2003) matches the extraordinary 2.8/200mm APO. However, even at f 8 the SSM doesn't reach the corner performance of the 200mm APO at f2.8. The 2.8/80-200mm APO (1987) has some slight weaknesses wide open, but becomes excellent (apart from some remaining CAs) even in the corners when stopped down to f8.

The difference between the two zooms is less pronounced between 80 ... 150mm. In the "low" range both zooms are very good even wide open.

Minolta AF 2.8/200mm APO HS

@ f2.8

Excellent resolution and contrast even wide open and even in the corners (not shown here)

Minolta AF 2.8/70-200mm APO G SSM

@ f2.8

Excellent resolution in the center, somewhat lower results at the image borders. No CAs, and very good contrast even wide open - a quite respectable performance!

Minolta AF 2.8/80-200mm APO

@ f2.8

The 2.8/80-200mm APO zoom clearly has its limits at f2.8. The center is quite OK, though neither contrast nor detail resolution are on par with the later 70-200mm SSM. The borders however are not really sharp at f2.8, and some CAs are visible.

Minolta AF 2.8/200mm APO HS

@ f4.5

Simply stunning results at f4.5 - look at the details of the cypresses and olive trees, and the Tuscan houses ...

Minolta AF 2.8/70-200mm APO G SSM

@ f4.5

In the center the SSM has clearly improved; it reaches the level of the 2.8/200mm prime. The borders however are not much better.

Minolta AF 2.8/80-200mm APO

@ f4.5

The center has improved (but not on par with the prime or the SSM), and the borders still too soft

Minolta AF 2.8/200mm APO HS

@ f8.0

At f8.0 the detail resolution is already slightly decreasing, due to diffraction effects

Minolta AF 2.8/70-200mm APO G SSM

@ f8.0

Even at f8 the border resolution of the Minolta 2.8/70-200mm SSM doesn't reach the levels of the 2.8/200mm APO at f2.8 ...

Minolta AF 2.8/80-200mm APO

@ f8.0

Now finally the border resolution of the Minolta 2.8/80-200mm APO becomes very good; it is even slightly better than the 70-200mm SSM.

CAs though are clearly visible while the SSM doesn't have much.
